Understanding Donald Trump’s America

How do Australians feel about America in 2025? And how does America – more precisely, Donald Trump and his administration – feel about us?

It has been a big, not-so-beautiful first six months of Trump Vol.II. Volatile stock markets and tariff wars, the threat of a US recession, global instability, China, AUKUS, Elon, ICE, the MAGA agenda, the Epstein files – so many critical matters that threaten America’s democratic institutions and its place in the world. Meanwhile, Australia watches closely as the decades-long alliance between our two nations tries to withstand the blowback.

The next Sorrento Writers Festival Political Lunch welcomes Dr Emma Shortis, Director of the Australia Institute's International & Security Affairs Program, and Bruce Wolpe, a Senior Fellow (non-resident) at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney and author of What Trump's Second Term Means for Australia: The shocking consequences for us and the world.

We invite you to join us for what promises to be a fascinating lunch discussion at The Baths in Sorrento.
